'D' porting the exhaust(leaving the port floor relatively untouched)is standard practice.

Same concept on the intake side but for different reasons. A round port runner on the intake side will have a tendency to draw the fuel as a stream rather than spread it out. Flat floors buy your 2 things.

1 - area over the short side
2 - the potential for the fuel to spread out.

On the intake side, the floor is not dead like the exhaust side. It tends to be fast.

# 1 INTAKE GAP= 0.55mm
SHIM=2.00mm =240
#2 INTAKE GAP= 0.40mm
SHIM=2.20mm =245
#3 INTAKE GAP= 0.30mm
SHIM=2.15mm =230
#4 INTAKE GAP= 0.40mm
SHIM =2.00mm =225

#1EXHAUST GAP=0.25mm
SHIM=2.00mm =210
#2EXHAUST GAP=0.30mm
SHIM=2.10mm =225
#3EXHAUST GAP=0.30mm
SHIM=2.10mm =225
#4EXHAUST GAP=0.40mm
SHIM=2.20mm =245

I'm looking for a 13mm gap ??? for all
Add shim size fitted to current gap size and deduct gap required (this case.15mm) gives you shim required.
Factory quoted maximum is .15mm which is the gap i have quoted for.
I wouldn't go below .10mm
this is what I got for the valve clearance

# 1 INTAKE GAP= 0.18mm
SHIM=2.45mm
#2 INTAKE GAP= 0.14mm
SHIM=2.50mm
#3 INTAKE GAP= 0.15mm
SHIM=2.30mm
#4 INTAKE GAP= 0.16mm
SHIM =2.25mm

#1EXHAUST GAP=0.16mm
SHIM=2.10mm
#2EXHAUST GAP=0.15mm
SHIM=2.25mm
#3EXHAUST GAP=0.13mm
SHIM=2.25mm
#4EXHAUST GAP=0.16mm
SHIM=2.55mm

I'm done with this valve adjustment for now.I had to take the head to the shop twice yesterday for heli coils.#1 Intake bothers me,but it's in spec.

I would tip #1 exhaust before bolting the head on...

Larry YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN A TEACHER. ;) I'm glad you posted that formula for the next guy !!

I will tear into the valvs next week
Larry could you explain how to tune this engine with the timing light? when gearing down I can hear a mild poping/backfire.

Hi guys I was wondering if someone could clarify the talk about the valve and shim clearance...
Is it true that the INTAKE VALVES are to open longer/bigger than the EXHAUST VALVES??
By doing this it will increase the bikes performance with pull off and mid band speed but sacrifice top end speed?

THESE ARE MY PRESENT VALVE CLEARANCES:

EXHAUST # 1 .13mm
# 2 .12mm
# 3 .12mm
# 4 .12mm

INTAKE #1 .11mm
#2 .13mm
#3 .13mm
#4 .13mm

Thanks!
