i dont recall if there is a side play measurement. just measure everything that is listed, and if its all in spec u r good to go.

76 KZ, frame gusset work,1200CC.Ported by Larry Cavanaugh, 1.5mm.over intakes, Carron Pipe, ZRX12 rear end, and seat,96zx9 front end.

I did read somewhere in a Factory manual that they adjust the end-float in shafts by a different thickness shim washers. Check existing gears for any rounding of drive pins, or their corresponding slots/holes), as this is where end-float will affect gear engagement.
