Takes 100 kicks to start w/ dyna coils?

Cleaned carbs (again, more thoroughly) but the bike still takes a long time to start, and when it does, it runs REALLY rich. I'm thinking now that it's the Dyna coils with the stock ignition. (previous owner updated from points to a newer electronic ignition)

I'm running Dyna 2.2ohm coils (grey ones) and the yellow spark plug wires. I have a set of the grey spark plug wires if those will work better, not sure about the difference but if I remember right, they're different. Also, a couple of the wires don't seem to be seating all the way on the coils. Like the rubber surround keeps it from being metal on metal, and you can push the plug wire in an extra 2mm or so into the coil (only to be pushed back out by the rubber, if that makes sense). I assumed this was normal because I was working with the same company, but I am beginning to question that now. I am getting spark to all plugs though, and proper voltage to the coils when key is on.

 If someone has the stock coils and wires let me know, I'm sick of this thing not starting first kick like it used to on stock coils! (they were brittle though and the wires broke in my hand one day)

Does the ignition system still include the oem ballist resister? The Dyna instructions say to remove it. Other then that, it sounds like you still have carb problems.

Do you have 12 volts to the coils? I'll send you stock coils for Dyna but that don't make sence.

Do you need 2.2 ohm coils ?

Go through your wiring with a tester and check everything out.

when it starts try spraying some water on all 4 of the header pipes see if they sizzle the water that should tell you if you have a dead or weak running cyl.

Doesn't the Dynamic require 3 ohm coils?

I run these Dyna DC1-2 3.0 ohm mini coils
with the factory gpz Ing.

Start's with a half turn of the crank.
I'll go get a video.

At the battery is around 12.5volts, and I lose a little through the wiring but I do get almost 12v at each coil with key on. This is the same I got with stock coils and it ran fine.

I'm not sure where I found it but everywhere I looked on the site when I first wanted to replace the coils said 2.2ohms with the yellow wires.

Zukdave those coils look like I'd get a "for sure" snap in connection of the wires vs. the ones I have now:

As you see on the coils, they get wider on the input as you get closer to the body, and the rubber from the wires seems to not let you push the wire all the way in. I even trimmed a little off of one of the wires but it didn't help. If those Dyna 3ohm coils work with my 78, I'll switch to them. (or just back to stock, which I may just do)

BTW my wiring is all removed and simplified down to:

Battery -> Key -> (1) -> fuse ->head and tail lights. (2) -> fuse -> igniter, coils, reg/rec. That's pretty much it if I remember right.

With Dyna coils you MUST run solid core wires.
Suppression core wires to not work right.

Im interested in knowing the outcome/solution here as I am going to run a similar setup, but with the oem electric ignition.

After looking, I have Accel yellow plug wires which I assume are suppression core. (Don't think they made yellow in solid core)

Do you really think that's all it is? From reading, it looks like I need to do something to the plugs to get them to work with solid core wires. I duuno, motorcycle electronics is something I know only a little about. I can wire 12v here and splice it there but that's about it.

Dyna coils work just fine with suppression plug wires. I use them (the coils and suppression wires) on my YZF600, FJ1200, TDM850, KZ1000 B4 and XJ650RJ. I always use their suppression wires so I dont have to use resister plug caps.
