Ticking sound from top of engine

Ticking sound from top of engine was created by BIGD
I have a ticking sound coming from inside the cylinder head cover. Front left side from what I can tell. Removed cylinder head cover, and all looks ok. Could this be in the valve spring, lifter or shim area. Sound does increase with RPMs. Thanks Don

This is on your 81 KZ1000?
Have you checked the Valve clearances?
The service manual in my signature will cover this on your bike. You will need to measure and possibly get some shims to adjust the clearances. You might be able to move a few around. Best to make a shim/ clearance map, and then order what you need. Z1enterprises.com will have the shims at a good price as well as a new valve cover gasket.

I had the same thing going on with my 1980 kz550. I put half a can of stp version of seafoam. I noticed the ticking sound decreased. Gonna change oil soon to see if it cleared out all of the gunk.
