Re: sanding cam bearings???

I was reading on a car forum about the same subject. A well known racer/engine builder was asked how he assembled a bottom end and he stated he used scotch brite on the bearings to scuffthem up before putting assembly lube on.
A youngster jumped in the discussion and told everyone that was the wrong way to do it and it would ruin the bearings and yada yada.....
Another member asked the youngster how many National Titles he had under his belt. No responce.
There is one thing going for us on this subject. These old engines are about bullet proof and most builders are are not going to a limit where the life of the engine depends on sanding/scuffing up bearings would means life or death for the engines.
On subjects such as this,I listen to the most experienced.
I have a coffe can of cam bearings and when I assemble a engine and if I don't have the right shims to bring the valve clearance into adjustment,I go through all my cam bearings and measure them and install the ones that will give me the clearance to bring my valves into the right tolerances.
That statement should bring on a fire storm.

Damned right it will; everyone knows you should keep old cam bearings in an empty peanut butter jar - not a coffee can.

You don't sand! You rub them with fine grey scotch pad.
It's a babbit style coating, just like car engine rod bearings.
I never bought a new bearing in 35 years. 3/4's of the time I never measured them with plasti-gauge
either. Put em together with a quality moly-bedum sulfide, break in grease. 1st 9 grand shift will let you know if there good! :woohoo:

I like the look of the 8" over. I wish it was a shock arm so the ride would be more comfortable and admittedly I have some traction issues due to not being able to find a sticky tire to fit on the stock 16" wheel. At some point I'm going to monoshock it and I'm thinking about taking a little of the stretch out when I do to help with that. If you ever come through fort Wayne on a wednesday night stop at Quaker steak and lube for bike night.

I didn`t see that post.
As with all things related to building engines, opinions will vary. Sometimes, it's just not worth the bandwidth to debate the issue. The way I do that particular method has never failed in 30 years. I think I would call it proven in the real world. Been run at Bonneville, drag strips, Willow Springs...... Not to mention 10s of 1000s of street miles..... I'll stick with it

I've got around 2500 of those 10's of thousands and have no signs of an issue. That's enough for me to believe it can be done.
