Sanding is fine if it is done correctly and as a way to get the correct shell/journal clearance in the case of tight fitting cams etc (as larry explained as he neatly dodged the scored shell cure  ). however it is not recommended as a cure for badly scored shells as chances are you will go beyond servicable limits.
Common practice for gaining clearance is to remove material from the back (non bearing surface) of the shell.
Only of use really in the case of installing new shells which are tight of course and not this case.

You have to clearance the tappet bores anyway so the valves need to come out. That's the time to see how well the cams spin. They should spin free and easy.

sorry I was informed by a builder of drag race motors the "it would not be a good idea" to sand bearings, which I should have quoted, also he said, the "if it were mine" thing, if LC says it OK then OK, I apologize as I did not intend to misinform

Sanding is one thing, crocus cloth is another, I would never use sand paper on any internal motor parts, crocus cloth is used on all types of internal parts even cranks and leaves no sandy residue behind that might embed onto a surface.

Why does it have to be a pissing contest? I have my way and you have your way, big deal, don't seem like something to get upset about. It would be a boring world if everyone thought the same.
