So I take it the head is off? Then you are trying to get the cylinder assy off? It does turn over, right? Look at this diagram, and look at #5 nut and #6 washer. Do you have these removed?
Don't hit the fins with anything, they are fragile and will break very easily. Look at the outer edge of each cylinder at the bottom gasket surface. There should be a small slot on each side for a wedge, like a flat screwdriver blade.

The two front middle studs are exposed at the bottom and corrosion locks the block to the studs.

Believe me I know what you mean.

make sure you have the nut and washer removed (shown as #5 and #6 above).. Getting the cylinder free requires prying at the sides where the notch is. If you had a factory manual, it shows exactly what I am talking about. Be careful not to break fins when prying.

NEVER TAP WITH HAMMER

The reason likely is the base gasket was sealed at the factory with something like 3 bond, a very strong sealer adhesive. Mine was. I ended up having to take a small motorcycle tire iron and grind the tip down until it was a perfect fit into the two pry notches on each side of the cylinder. Work them alternately and they finally started to release.

The adhesive held the gasket so well that I had to tear the gasket in half to get the cylinder off. Half stuck to the cylinder flange, half stuck to the crankcase surface.

This from my service manual, and shows the picture and has instructions, like I tried to explain. Do you have the Service manual for your Twin? it will have the Info just like it, only a different picture.

My 750 twin factory manual also says those pry notches are there for exactly that reason: to pry the cylinder off. FYI, getting a tool that fits snug into the slot gives more leverage.

what is the best way to get an old gasket and gasket sealer off of my cylinder block? Most of it came off when I got the block off but some of it is stuck on in various places

Single edged razor blade at right angle to the surface. Stuff rags into the crank case so the debris can't fall in and vacuum it up regularly as you go around. It's a slow process.

On mine I tried acetone, spray on gasket remover, brake fluid soak, Kroil penetrating oil, every chemical I had and none of it did anything. Get ready to do some scraping.
