starter clutch replacement
21 Apr 2011 21:37
I have a 1983 kz750 ltd belt and I'm trying to gain access to my starter clutch, the manual is very unclear and I'm still new to fixing bikes, wondering if you guys can help paint a clearer picture. Thanks for reading

Hi strider,
Pretty sure that your bike is similar to my KZ550 in that it runs with a primary chain. Check out www.buykawasaki.com . The starter clutch is located on the secondary shaft. OnkleB has written up a great description of the process. You'll have to part the oil pan and the clutch cover. Pull the clutch basket and the secondary shaft. The starter clutch will fall into your hand. I'll bet the flat rate was four hours or less. Meer mortals may need a whole day.
Go For it!

Sorry, I'm really new at all this and this might sound really stupid, but I can't remove the clutch cover, I removed all screws, tried wedging it with a flat head, and applied wd-40 and it still won't budge is there something I'm missing? Oh and KZCSI can you link me to that OnkleB description you were talking about, I searched for it, but couldn't find it. Sorry about all the questions.

I'm pretty sure that the 83 KZ750 LTD Belt is a 750 twin and doesn't have a secondary shaft.
Remove left side foot peg
Remove shift lever
Remove Belt sprocket cover
Remove Alternator cover
Remove starter
Remove starter chain
Remove alternator rotor
Starter clutch is on the back of the rotor
The bolt that holds the rotor on is left hand thread
The clutch cover can be a bear to get off.
When you say "750" around here most people assume it's a four, and if you don't specify that it is a 750 most will assume it's a 900/1000.
The "OnkleB description" covers replacing the starter clutch on a 650/750 four, and won't help at all.
Most twin owners are members at the Kawasaki twins owners forum , including me.

I think I'll just disassemble as much as I can in the morning and take pictures, because I'm starting to get really confused. Sorry for all the confusion.

From another post you made:
Hey guys, I'm new to this site and motorcycles, So I have an old 1983 kz750 k1(belt) I believe,
According to Kawasaki.com:
Model: KZ750-K1 (LTD Belt) (1983) is a 750 twin, it doesn't list a KZ750 LTD Belt four cylinder at all, for any year.
So, what exactly do you have?
Post a pic for us to ID, because there is no such thing as a 1983 KZ750 K1 Belt four cylinder, if it's a four cylinder 83 750 LTD then it's a chain drive KZ750H. "Belt" means it doesn't have a chain, it's driven by a rubber belt.
And every thing I have posted, both here and in the other thread, is about a 83 KZ750 LTD Belt, which is a two cylinder, and doesn't apply to a four cylinder.

Good catch Steve! I didn't go so far as to check out the final drive. But Strider does say his is a four.
Strider,
I cannot find OnkleB's write up. I do have a hard copy but it's oil covered and would be difficult to scan. I did find another however in the FileBase. Go to the FileBase. Choose the "Not Model Specific" section. On page Five you'll find an article entitled KZ650/KZ750 four starter clutch repair. The job can be done with the engine in the frame although it's not the easiest starter clutch I've done.
If Steve's right and you've got a twin replacing the starter clutch is easy by comparison.

Oh no! I'm not saying he has a twin, I.m saying he misidentified it as a KZ750 LTD Belt twin. He says it's a four, and I figure anyone can count exhaust pipes and get it right
And by the time he replaces the starter clutch he'll be wishing he had a twin

My bad guys, I'm really sorry about all the confusion
Here are some pictures of my bike, hopefully someone can identify it correctly.
I'm currently still trying to remove the clutch casing and still no signs of budging.
