Difference between Z1 and KZ900?

Just verified the bike I just got is a Z1. What's different about the ones
made after 75? Also, since it's a Z1 is it more desired? Thanks for readin.

its more desirable to some people like me,but other people prefer kz's.
its kind of like the 1929 ford versus 32 ford thing,the 32s are everyplace you look while the 29s are more classic in my book

Back in the day the Z1 was the big dog on the block. The baddest fastest and newest Super Bike to have. I remember my buddy got one (back in 1975)and had it delivered with what was called a Super Fairing on it. He was outta sight baby. Don't remember what ever happened to the company that made the super fairing, but the bike lives in history as Kawasakis answer to the big Honda Four's.

Geiz, the big differences are that the Z1 was made in Japan, in smaller numbers, and imported to the United States. Starting with the 1976 KZ900 the bikes were built in the US in much larger numbers. The scarcity is part of what makes the Z1 more valuable. Z1's have some unique parts that are not common to the other big bore KZ's. Your bike would be quite valuable if correctly restored.

The main difference in the motor between the Z1 and a KZ900 is the carburetors. A Z1 will have 28mm Mikunis and the KZ900 should have the smaller 26mm Mikunis. The KZ900 still had the lighter crankshaft like the Z1. The heavier crank came in on the KZ1000. The cases interchange, but IIRC the correct Z1 cases have some unique features such as a smaller VIN # badge.

as with any bike or car, the newer models got mechanical upgrades to improve deficiencies. the 76 got a stronger frame and bigger gas tank, and minor style changes. latter the frames got even better, and motor components got stronger.

i prefer kz's .

because then you don't have to listen to everybody whine about restoring the d@mn thing :whistle:
