Tapping Cylinder head for helicoil was created by jbrewer73
Well I just got a 78 KZ1000 and realized one of the head bolts is stripped. It is one of the small 10mm on the side. I tried to tap to put helicoil in but when i tried backing it out it came out ablut half way and stopped. Now it is just spinning but not backing out. I bought the kit so i know I am using the correct tap.

Can anyone please help out on what the heck I did or did not do?

Thanks
JB

Many riders here have used this type of thread repair:

Heli-coils can possibly work for some situations, but as you found out, they will back out if not correctly applied.

Let me try and clarify. i dont think i was clear on my last post. I never got the helicoil in. I just tried to tap but when doing so I am unable to remove the tap. I can only back it out half way but then it is spinning. So i cannot remove the actual tap so I can put the helicoil in.

thanks for the feedback

Did you tap the hole dry? Taps need cutting fluid to prevent breakage. I use the black sulfur fluid found at hardware stores for pipe thread cuting.

It's smelly, but lets the tap cut good. Avoid any cutting fluid that can damage Aluminum as this will make for a weak repair.

Tap-matic for Aluminum is a good one, and so is Rapid Tap for Aluminum.

"So i cannot remove the actual tap "....

Assumption is head not removed off engine?

EDIT:

Side 10mm.... Look underneath, my thread goes all the way through top to bottom.... Possibly thread all the way through....

If not, remove head, drill from underside slightly larger then tap... Then re-tap/serts, 12/13mm I guess be one way...

So your tap is stuck? Correct? You shouldn't have to pull the head to re-tap the outer head bolt. If you can't pull it out while spinning it, you may have to revert to what OMR suggested, and then use something like a BigSert, which is used to re-thread holes where the Helicoil has gone wrong.

The head is still on the bike. I only used WD while doing this. I did tasp slowly though. 3 turns then backed out a couple turns before continuing. Im not sure how I would get the tap out the other side if I thread all the way through.

I think I might be stuck taking the head off.
