Straight pipes yay or nay? was created by Omaha Rider
I don't want to spend the money on a 4into1 exhaust but want my kz650 SR D to be louder. Can I take the mufflers off of my stock exhaust pipes? Would I have to cut them off? Would it be bad to run the bike like that without rejetting it?

Thanks

Cutting the mufflers off will make the bike run like crap without being properly re-jetted. It also makes the exhaust enbearably loud on the highway!

Try small steps first to slightly increase the volume. Maybe drill some extra holes in the end cap? Or one off the back/bottom of the pipes?

Start small so you can tailer the sound. You will quickly regret it if you just chop them off.

I agree. I used to have a 250 ninja and I wanted it to be a bit louder so I drilled out the rivets in the silencers. It sounded great but it had no power below about 8K RPM. So I put half of the rivets back in and it gave a good sound and moved the power more to the midrange where it was more usable.

No! That would not be a good move!

+1. Running straight pipes on my 400 and you can read what I am dealing with in my idling thread I just posted.

Regardless of noise level, the jetting will be off.

If your stock exhaust is in good shape you can probably get enough $ for it on eBay to buy a 4 into 1 and have $ left over. If you cut the pipes you may as well throw them in the trash as they will be way too loud, make the bike run like crap, and have no resale value at all. Ed
