Yeah, sea foam, thats the name I was searching for!

The problem I suppose is that it will thin your oil allowing it to leak, but then again it will also thin the sludge! I don't think seafoam will eat away any the seals/gaskets, seeing as its meant to be able to be stored in a gas tank/carburetor for long periods of time (where there is plenty of rubber it would come in contact to).

I doubt you would have any problems with the sea foam, but really I doubt that sea foam would do much better of a job than a rodneyo's or kx_125_pilot's suggestion, and it seems that there suggestions may aire on the cautious side. KZ_Rage's suggestion is on the very cautious side, but a great idea, especially if the oil came out dirty.

Happy wrenching

Well today I did a oil change on my new 1100 ltd. I used Shell Rotella T, diesel motor oil, very high in detergent and zinc. It will clean out that motor/trans in No time flat!

Rotella T has no friction modifers to mess with the wet clutch either. I have used it in loads of bikes over the years, and tons of other people do to. I paid $7.49 for a gallon jug at Home Depot, in their little automotive section.

hth,

Ron

Pull the oil pan to see what's up. Dude on ebay sells the gaskets for something like $7. My kz1100 was clean as a whistle aside from accumulated crud in the oil pan. This crud would have been untouched by typical snake oil rinse. Took a good hour with a stiff brush and kerosene to get it clean.

i think it would hit your oil filter and go no farther.....and if your filter gets too clogged, then there is a bypass circuit i believe

Interesting discussion so far.
I remember a very respected member, I think it may have been Wired George, who would always check the oil pump filter screen on his new bikes.
Maybe WG (or whoever that was) will chime in on his experiences. Again it couldn't hurt and it should take that long or be very expensive!

so probably the best way to get all the sludge out is to drain the oil while it's still hot and the sludge is desolved??

I took the opportunity to drop the pan off mine recently, whilst I had the top (cases up) off. Thought it might be a good idea, in case I dropped anything down the cam chain tower. I did, and the bits fell straight through.

Had a lot of crap in the pan, especially hardened in the corners. Dug it all out, took the oil pump out and rebuilt it using the best bits I had from three other acquired spares, cleaned the whole lot up with a can of carb cleaner till it shone.

Replaced and finished buttoning up the top end, then bolted the pan back on with a new gasket. IMHO, it was a job worth doing.
