gear shift lever was created by gengomerpyle
i have a 1982 gpz 750R1 that i just replaced the clutch cable. when i took the sprocket cover off i noticed its full of oil and dirt. im pretty sure one of the seals in the tranny cover is leaking which is no big deal to fix. i have put the cover back on while i wait to order the parts to fix leak. since then i have noticed a lot of movement (back and forth) in the gear shift lever that i can wiggle it with the foot shifter. what would cause that? i never noticed it before i took the cover off. is that maybe caused from the seal or is there a bearing on the other end of shaft and on the other side of the tranny cover that also may need replacing?

i just bought this bike about 2 months ago so this leak is new to me. the bike didnt show any leaks on the ground prior so i had no clue to it. thanks

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc.

Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Probably time for a new return spring and seal on the transmission cover for the gear shift shaft.

While you're in there, check the condition of the clutch push rod seal.

im going to degrease it this weekend and how bad its leaking and where. but i did plan to replace all seals when i have the cover off. the seals dont cost that much so it wouldnt hurt to replace them.

i went there earlier and wrote done the part numbers. 2 of the numbers have changed but i went down to the local kawaski dealer today to see if they had them. they can get them but they needed to order the parts. they said it was 47 bucks. i can get the parts online for 22-25 bucks from speedsupplies.com

When needing parts, it's a good idea to also check with Z1 Enterprises who can get virtually any available part (Japanese and other country suppliers included), and usually less expensive than dealer's prices. Regardless of whether the part is listed on the Z1E site. And can tell whether a part is no longer available.

Z1E customer service and speed of delivery is second to none.

Z1E also has a handy email inquiry available, along with phone and fax.

Don't forget also that your chain is going to deposit residues in that clutch cover area and being in front of the wheel will also throw road crud onto the mix. As to the loose lever, I think the cover seal may be gone but would do as others have stated and do a little checking for other issues while apart. Do it all once!

you know i was thinking the same thing about the cover. it looks like something goes in there the gear shifter goes thru cover. but when i look at the diagrams for the cover it doesnt show a sear for the gear. it would make sense that a seal would go there but where do i find a part number since it isnt showing on any diagrams.

i just looked up a diagram for a kz750h2 and it shows a seal on the front and the back of the cover for the gear shaft. its the same part as the seal that goes in the tranny cover.

my seals and transmission gasket came in today. the gasket looks to be metallic. do i use a sealing compound like silicone or does it go on dry?

Usually a light oil applied to the outside of the seal is about all you'll need. Use a socket as a driving tool to press it in.
