those are decent ..they have em on e-bay free shipping and comes with a case same quality level and prices..i have one and was happy with it..it did give me outside piston sizes but as i rotated the piston to try and see the rises and falls in sizing... it was like trying to get two knife edge surface to sit right against the outside circle...it gave me a great read once settled and still...but was the next measurement at the same angles and left me wondering if i was holding all the things the same each time....make any sense ...cool tool and they do work i guess...but really...they are more for checking hard parts.,..bolts......inside bolt holes thread depths ie (the sliding plunger shown in your links picture)......shim stock...bolt lengths....thickness of washers ect....

cool tool though and you will use it a lot for the price...

the inside tool looks like one of these....

yeah craig, ill can only imagine i can at least find out if i need machining done by using this tool. compared to 200 bucks for someone else to check my clearences for me. ill grab one of these tomm and get some #'s out to you guys, plus use my manual as a reference.

this may work for the outside, but the inside.... www.victornet.com/alphabetic/Metric-Micrometers/620.html

maybe this for inside?.... www.victornet.com/report/Inside-Measuring-Tools/131.html

pull the rings off the pistons and get your self some 6" long feeler gauge strips you can buy them many different places including harbour freight, slide the feeler gauge in the bore then put the piston in and try pushing it thru together if t goes snugly but not tight that is roughly your clearance try it all the way down the bore, the piston skirt is the biggest so slide the piston in top down.do this in both directions thrust face and 90 degrees to the thrust face, this method is not nearly as accurate as a micrometer and bore gauge but it does work way better that the digital caliper you were planning on trying and i really have a hard time anyone would charge 200 to measure clearance that must have been for a complete bore job.

timebomb, i was looking at this 2-1/8 - 3-1/2 telescoping guage for $8.00. then i can use the 2-3" micro meter to measure the distance? www.victornet.com/alphabetic/Telescoping-Gages/805.html

also if you use the feeler gauges don't go thicker than about .004 or .005" anymore than that and you can damage the sleeves or pistons. besides electrical theory measuring is one of the skills to aquire and be good at it . sometimes it can take weeks for some of my students to devolop the feel and skills to do it right. so unless you have someone that can show you how to use them it would probably be a waste of money to buy a bunch of micrometers and a bore gauge.

if you are refering to the flat feeler guages, wont it scratch my cylinder wall when i push the piston through the sleeve? 90 degrees to the thrust face? whats that?

also, in my manual it says piston/cylinder clearance standard is .043-.070. you stated dont go bigger than .004-.005. am i missing something?

standard cylinder diameter is 70.00-70.019
standard piston diameter is 69.94-69.96

what you need is

bore gauge

digital calipers

manual should have the specs in it

look on line and get a set ( telescoping bore gauges)

i use the 6Pc set 5/16--6"
