rear wheel spins while in neutral? was created by John T
84 GPZ1100

while on the center stand, in neutral... the rear wheel spins.. grab it with your hand and it stops...
let go, it starts again..

on the road, the clutch pulls fine, no slipping...

over the years, I have noticed other bikes doing this.. slightly.
but nothing ever this bad... the wheel is spinning quite fast....

thoughts?

Normal friction. If you can hold it with your hand, no worries. A thinner oil might make it do it less?

Just a normal condition due to oil being flung from the clutch plates like a automatic transmission does in a car.

revving motor in neutral

Excellent video answer to the question. :cheer:

Kept waiting on the gent to press the brake pedal, but he never did.
I would've had to do so on general principle.

Actually it's not the clutch that causes the wheel to spin in neutral, it's the transmission gears. If you look at the transmission while in neutral there are no dogs engaged, but some gears are spinning always when the engine is running, some are splined to the output shaft. These gears are side by side with only a few thousands of an inch separating them so naturally when one spins the others try to spin with them without load, so once the wheel is on the ground it is no longer noticable. There is potential for this problem to actually be a problem though. I bought a KZ650 and the engine really pulled in neutral badly, enough that it made it very hard to enjoy riding. All the guys kept saying "adjust your clutch". If you think about it what does the clutch do in neutral? Absolutely nothing as the plates are completely locked with the lever out and the engine should not have noticable drive in neutral. What it ended up being was I had a defective gear that had a pressed in center that was as far as I can tell never fully centered on the gear which basically made the gear too wide for the space it occupied on the shaft so it was supposed to be an idler but was binding badly.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

it is not normally a problem...i guess Rons makes sense that in rare cases it can be indicative of coming or existing tight clearances ........

i know this sounds self explanatory but....it can however be highly dangerous as owners use this free wheeling activity to clean the rear wheel.......i myself have almost lost a finger nail or had a rag suck my fingers into the rear sprocket...........trying to clean rims while the bike is running in neutral works until the first time where like me you lay the meat of a finger tip open...sounds...dumb.......many have this lesson down though,.....

great for checking run out

great for lubing the chain

Someone over at the Kawasakimotorcycle.org site reported that his nephew lopped off a finger while lubing or cleaning the chain on his sportbike while the engine was running. I wonder how often that happens? One or two folks chimed in, saying that it's apparently a normal practice to lubricate the chain n stuff while the engine is running. I say... nuts.
