Have not seen any further info here - but thought I would pass this on. There is a pretty good write up on kz650.info on how to do a starter clutch rebuild. This link should take you to it. forums.kz650.info/index.php?action=dlatt...pic=586.0;attach=873

Just curious...

The starter clutch sprocket spins freely by hand to the left [front of the bike] and CAN NOT be spun to the right (rear of the bike) by hand. The starter spins it to the right (if I figured it correctly) so wouldn't that mean that the clutch is working?

If I am correct then could it be that the starter needs rebuilt?

Is there any way to check the starter aside from just connecting it to a battery. Once connected to a battery the starter spins but makes a LOT of noise... at one point it made a squealing type of noise.

Just to add..

I took apart the starter and there was a lot of black carbon like buildup and the positive side of the brushes that connects to the positive bold has a large chunk that was broke off...

Im guessing that I should start with rebuilding the starter?

It sounds like that is a good place to start.

I have done this fix twice. The first time I just replaced the rollers and springs. That fix lasted a few thousand miles. The second time I did it right and replaced the entire assembly. The job is an all-day job, even if you have the parts sitting right there on your workbench ready to go. You will be tired when you are done. Get the entire assembly and do it right the first time.

 All day job! My boss would fire you...

Yeah, I don't claim to be a speed tech. Just an amateur who plods his way through using simple hand tools, some research and a little ingenuity. Good thing I don't do this for a living.

The parts shop was closed today I am gonna go down in the morning and order new brushes and such to rebuild the starter hopefully have something done soon. I want to ride it so bad :P

Only been able to put 500 miles on it since I bought it [had it about a month] I knew something was acting up when I bought it but was hoping to get a little more out of it... Oh well thats what I get for being cheap :P

I still cant complain for $400

Here is my bike if anyone is interested :)

Great looking machine. You can still push start it and ride till you get the parts.

It may not go into 2nd when not running. The times I have pushed started mine I used 1st. Held in the clutch pushed it and jump on and dumped the clutch and when it fires pull the clutch back in again.
