I love cam bolts was created by cdulmage
putting my kz1100 d1 cams back after a complete shim upgrade and you guys are right 12 f/p is to much.
I read on inserts, retapping, etc and my problem is this. What about the next time??
I noticed the cam cap bolt hole are external on the outside front and back of the head
so my thought is to drill out those 8 bolt holes flush the bottom and nut and bolt these 8 cam cap bolts.
now about the internal cam cap bolt holes.
how far down can I drill and tap? or are there other creative ideas out there
my main thought is this. The next time I pull the valve cover for what ever reason. I want the cam cap bolt to be a safe secure nobrainer (well simi nobrainer).

Seems like I remember back in the day that racers replaced the bolts with studs and nuts, but I've slept since then, so I may be hallucinating.. :silly:

85 inch-pounds with a tiny 3-thread tall bead of red threadlocker half way down the bolt. Tap the bolt with a rubber mallet a few times, then repeat till torque wrench clicks immediately, and always sequence tighten everything!
You can just tap larger about 1.5 cm, then use a corresponding length bolt.
Even with shorter bolts, they hold good and hard with this recipe for ever.

I think you could source some quality "Step" studs. They would be 7mm thread on the one end and the 6mm on the other. The 8mm x 6mm steps are pretty common to find, but would require as much drilling as a insert. If the 7mm x 6mm steps can be sourced, this would allow you to bolt up normally, without going out to a insert drill size. Might cost $2-3 bucks each though?

Doesnt the kz1100 have 8mm. cam cap bolts?
once u time cert the thread u will never have a problem again. dont use a ft lbs torque wrench though. they are not acurate enough for small # like 12lbs. u need to use an inch lb torque wrench(144inch.lbs).
i would use blue locktight not red. blue will hold them just fine and they will be easy to remove for the next shim job.
the z1 motors have 6mm cap bolts at 9 ft lbs (81 inch.lbs)so u realy shouldnt need 12 ft lbs.

1/4 drive ratchet with 10mm short socket and a feel for aluminum threads is the best cam torque method I've ever found
Lube the threads good too...
