I agree that some preliminary research is a good idea, and if that is what the poster did, then I say good on him.
It just seems to me that it might be more productive to resurrect a more current thread that might include some currently active members. It also seemed to me that a more model-specific thread might have been most useful as the procedure is not the same for all models.
Yes, I know he may not have a service manual, but a little of that searching you mentioned might have led him to this copy.
