low compression in one cylinder, was created by roccbottom
guys please help me out, heres the run down.had a valve job and cylinder honing done, valve adjustment and corrections done, valve timing set, carbs synced.added new spark plugs, and wires,Now after having no compression before getting the cams lined up correctly, set the cams to have the following numbers from the cylinders,#1-120 #2-100 #3-140 #4-150. added the cap full of oil, compression didn't change. so i tore the top half down once more.hoping to find something broken or out of place. no such luck.B.T.W/ it's my 84 GPz 1100. where should i begin looking? or is it just time to purchase another engine..

Are you saying you had the cams mistimed at one point?

Based on that "assumption" and the fact that oil didn't raise the PSI, I would suspect you may have tagged a valve in the low cylinder. Try pouring liquid in the ports and see if they leak.

what was causing it to shut down?

Yes the cams were mis-timed at one point.the carbs were bench synced. fuel was provided by a temporary fuel source. it started up ran for a good moment.then shut off, it could be immediately restarted run for a short time shut off. reason for shutting down is unknown to me. it has strong spark, its getting fuel. I dont know?

Re-Check your Head bolt torque. If that's OK try doing a leakdown test. That will tell you if a valve or ring got messed up.

This would be a strong symptem of a poor valve seating. if u add oil u seal the rings, if compresion does not change, then u must suspect the valves. likely a bent valve or poor seat.
follow Lary's advice and check that the valve will hold penatrating oil.

Take the head off and inspect it thoroughly and properly.
Make sure every valve is perfect, and with the head upside down, fill the valve area "bowls" with gasoline. If it leaks past a valve it will need to be lapped.

Install the head.

Cams must be installed/timed correctly and hand turn over motor slowly to ensure no valve/piston contact.

Your cams are probly fine.

If a shop did the work prior, demand a refund or the work be done properly.

Did they straight edge the head and cylinder surfaces to make sure they are not warped?
