Oil filters..is Fram a scam?
08 Apr 2006 14:30
Grabbed a Fram oil filter for the 650 today and it was $10.00 compared to the $5-$6 for the Emgo's that I was buying last year. After snooping around in the archives a bit, it seems that the Frams aren't necessarily worth the additional cost. What are your opinnions, Emgo just as good as Fram? I could have also picked up a NAPA Gold for cheaper than the Fram, but passed on it because I wasn't familiar with them.

the fram i ordered out of denniskirk wasn't that high,
6 or 7 bucks..but as to quality i would guess the fram is better..just my opinion..i am far from a bike expert.
good luck!

Go about ½ way down this link for the Fram part number for Kawi applications, then all the way to the bottom of the link for the cross references to NAPA Gold aka Wix (kit includes new O rings)

I use Emgos, buy them four at a time from Z1ent. I think the best filter is the one that gets changed regularly.

In reading a few articles about filters, the testers were not impressed with Frams. I stopped using them and went with WIX and the WalMart brand. The Walmart brand was built better than the frams according to the article I saw.

Fram is the only oil filter that I have ever had that blew apart. What ever they used to bond the paper to the rubber just gave out.

Well that's the capper. This box o crap is going back. When I got home, I found one of the EMGO's that I bought last year anyway. I appreciate all of the responses.

I buy original Kawasaki filters at the local dealership, can't remember how much I pay, but I do have peace of mind using them.

Ordering a quantitiy may just be a good idea. I bought three EMGO's last year and had one left. The city that I lived in last year was just big enough to get decent prices and aftermarket parts availability. I live in the most rural province in Canada and recently moved to a northern community which basicly has next to nothing for my bike. There isn't even a legitimate Kaw dealership here, just farmer Fred snowmobile/atv/chicken humping outfits. Have to drive 1.5 hours for an air filter. Yup, I'd better load up.

I think the Napa Gold filters are good, and I think that in the same oil filter test that rated Fram bad, the Napa Gold filters were rated pretty high.
But it's been quite awhile since I read that test, maybe I ought to look for it and raed it again
Here is one (but not the one I am looking for):
Fiter Test
Every link I can find to the test I am looking for appears to be dead, so I guess it is no longer available

I found the same thing steell and they rated Fram poorly. I'm wondering if Fram somehow shut them down:huh:
