Aluminum Cam Plugs on KZ1000...sealant advice?
16 Jun 2010 17:31
I'm replacing the cam plugs in my 1000 with a set
of aluminum ones. I got all the surfaces nice and clean
and they seem to fit nice and flush & snug. Just looking for some advice on sealing them, more specifically what type of sealant and where to apply it.

I use Permatex Ultra Black. High temo, high torque, and very resistant to oil. Never had 'em leak. I also spread a little on the top of the plugs at the gaps where they meet with the cam cover gasket surface.

Good deal, I have a brand new tube of that in my toolbox.
I did however, speak far too soon about them fitting nice and flush...the first two I tested out on the RH side of the engine fit like a dream, but then I went back out and sat the two on the LH side, yeah....not such a dream. I suppose I'll have to take some material off the top of them until they are where they should be. After spending $40 on them, I don't want to give up that easy. It's not just the plugs either, I flip flopped all of them and its just the LH side that is the issue. A coincidence? Bad luck?

As far as a sealant,,,
ANYTHING but an RTV ,,,
That stuff has NO business anywhere near a bike.
Yamabond5 or something like that would be my choice.
PS. for the stock rubber ones ,I put them in backwards ,,
ie. the flat "outside" with the flange on the inside.
Just make sure they don't touch the end of your cams, NO leaks ever and the last forever.

Please explain why RTV has no business near a bike. I would like to know what I am doing wrong b/c I use it all the time on all my bikes. What am I missing?

Originally used Permatex High temp... Then on a tip from others, went with the 3M case sealer.... The sealer is a little thinner in thickness, smooths out for a tighter seal...
Same time, No leaks from either....

I prefer the case sealer to install them.
A thin film of RTV on top of them when installing the valve cover gasket can help you save the gasket next time the valve cover is removed.

Most sealer products are some kind of RTV (silicone rubber derivative) , car makers have been using it for decades.
