Do you mean the timing chain that goes around the cam and top rotors?

ok well i took the valve cover off, aligned the TDC mark on the crankshaft. the arow on the rear sprocket was flush with the cylinder head and the 32nd pin in the chain was were it was supposed to be on the front sprocket, but the front arrow wasn't flush with the cylinder head like my manual shows, any thoughts. And why would the ignition timing be a problem for compression if it wont start?

I second this question - on my 900 there is pressure from the valve springs that causes the hash mark not to line up perfectly until the chain is tightened and I turn the engine so that the camshaft turns an entire rotation.

Please note that not everyone agrees that this is best practice as if things are off a valve and cylinder head might touch while turning the engine over.

the rear hash mark is about a quarter inch high, so the arrow is a quarter inch below the head.
i've also already trightened it ad turned it a few times with the crankshaft and a 17mm wrentch. ill post a picture

wellmy bikes running now, but i had to get rid of the electric start, something was screwy withit and it was holding the crankshaft. It does have some problems with one cylinder cutting out after a bit of getting on it. i think its due to the Dyna s lobe not fitting snugly on the timing advancer. it seems to catch on the spring arms and not let them expand. If i just rev it a few times it resets the arms though. At least I think that is what the problem is.
