Compression question was created by KZCool
I have a 76 kz750, and I was wondering if it was possible for a bike to gain compression for some reason. My starter suddenly wouldn't turn the bike over. it sounds very strained, and my kick-start stops as i push it down, then goes down when i try the second time. If it the compression can suddenly jump, how and how can i check and fix it.

Carbon build up can raise it more than a point, it's happened to me when I used colder plugs. from 180 to as much as 220 on one cylinder and 224 on another.

Don't know about anyone else but I'd definitely be pulling the valve cover off for confirmations...

Check cam lobe orientations and cam sprocket markings for correct tooth count and lobe orientation...

Is this something that has developed over time or has just started being an issue? You may have as previously posted jumped cam time, but is it also possible to have lost the the ignition timing so far by having the points cam/ advancer loose on the crankshaft? Is it keyed in place?

Possibility of hydraulic lock from raw fuel collected inside combustion chamber.

Easy enough to evacuate, but would not attempt to start and run engine until checking for fuel contamination of crankcase oil, and taking whatever corrective measures may be needed.

I have had a lot of problems with carbon in my cylinders because I always have to have the choke on, I just put a Dyna s ignition on it and the coil mod that I hear about on here, so the timing was a pretty simple fix with that. As far as the raw fuel goes, I couldn't ride it for a while due to a clutch cable, and probably had some unburned fuel in one of the cylinders. I took the spark plugs out after about 3 weeks or so when i got my cable and the bike wouldn't start. I have since then been fixing thinf=gs left and right that wont work: clutch is lock on the drive, starter clutch was/is slipping, and the cylinder now has too much compression. im pretty sure its just one, but not sure which. Any more help would be awesome.:S

You need to fix that problem Running with the choke always on will lead to bigger problems (if fact, it may have already). Regarding the compression; why not simply do a compression check on each cylinder? Ed

something is telling me you have more issues than carbon build up, since the clutch cable broke, is there a possibility that the clutch may have a problem causing it to lock up the rest of the engine.
with the plugs removed does it turn over? by either the starter or kick
as said before pull the valve cover and also the side cover and try to rotate the engine backwards if it wont turn over.

im pretty new with bikes. I don't know how to do a compression test, and yes, it will turn with the plugs out no problem. I can also turn the engine backwards via the cam on the right side. i can also put it in nuetral, turn the engine without plugs, and itll turn just fine using the starter. what allows you to change the compression?
