Before you cut on the stock pipes: if they are in good shape, they are worth a lot of bucks. Restorers are always looking for them.
Then how come I can't get rid of mine? Guess, I'll have to try selling on ebay? I've had on CL for now....

I wasn't planning on it (running tiny pipes all the way back). But if I have 1 inch pipes to start, I'm not sure what I can do to go too much larger.
It would take a big step in an adaptor to do much else. I really wasn't going to go too much further back that where the joint is now. Maybe a foot with a turn out tip or something. I'd use those 14" turnouts I see in Dennis Kirk and on ebay, but I don;t think 1" input is an option on those.

I stopped at the auto parts store to look at exhaust pipes and adapter s. It will take 3 pieces per side. I guess that isn't too bad. If I reuse the heat shields it might be OK.

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but using the heat shield to hide the adapters sounds like a good plan. At the worst, I'd guess that maybe one adapter might show, perhaps... which wouldn't seem like a big deal to me.
