I need some exhaust help was created by djturnz
82 KZ750(4) LTD

My exhaust is 4 into 2 with a cross over.
I want to pull my stock mufflers and use internal baffles and then have custom pipes done. I haven't pulled the mufflers yet, but I wanted to look for the baffles now. I used my calipers and measured the OD of the pipe before the muffler as 1.18". I assume that gives me a 1" pipe ID? Is that right? That seems awful tiny.

All the baffles I've seen start at 1.5" and go up.

I assume that someone has pulled their stock pipes, is it really 1.18 OD?

I haven't pulled them yet because I have inspection coming up in a week.

Thanks in advance.

Before you cut on the stock pipes: if they are in good shape, they are worth a lot of bucks. Restorers are always looking for them.

Cut them off? They look to me clamped on.

And they aren't rusty. The only part thats rusted is the screw and bolts holding the heat shield on that covers where the muffler attaches.

Someone already cut off the stock mufflers & clamped on those.

Ok, so these aren't stock? What are the stock ones supposed to look like on the LTD? They are ugly as hell, so I assumed they were factory.

Assuming the header part is stock, what is the ID of that pipe supposed to be? I need baffles.

What about those Harley Coil baffles?
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123

They are 1.75". I could just cut off a couple coils to get down to 1" or whatever it is.

The photo below is a 1980 KZ750-Ltd w stock mufflers which are the same the later H-models. You could reference the diagrams at Kawasaki.com to see how they're constructed.

You're trying to fit baffles into the pipes where the stock mufflers were cut off?
Why not put the baffles inside the new pipes you plan on installing?

I could do that, though I think I'd still be in the same boat. A 1" pipe ID. 1.18" OD would allow for maybe a 1.25" OD pipe. I still won't find a 1.18" baffle.

The header pipes are 1.25 I think, so why is it necked down so far? two pipes at 1.25 necked together at 1". That seems odd. Or is this to force the excess gasses through the crossover pipe?

I didn't realize you were going to run teeny tiny pipes all the way. It seems like the easiest thing to do would be to simply find matching pipes & baffles in whatever size, then install that.

Then they are not stock. Somebody already took the hacksaw to them. Those mufflers look like the ones JC Whitney used to sell.
