Just use a reverse tap that starts from the deep end where the threads should still be good.

No disassembly required.

Good Fortune! :)

I had the same problem on a alumiun car head.I brought the bad cylinde up to almost TDC on compression stroke, filled the chamber with grease retapped to a larger plug size and finished turnibg the crank to finisf compression stroke, pushed out all the cuttings and most of the grease,a helicoil my give you problems becauese the different metals have different rates of expansion. Will smoke on startup while the grease burns off.

I have to second what Patton said about the reverse tap. I've fixed 2 heads this way and it works great. Make sure you fully understand how this tool works before you dismiss it.

Heli coils will not work for the spark plugs, the ydoo however make a timesert, which is a threaded sleeve , you drill it out larger and tap it, screw in the sleeve, with locktite, you now have a flat surface for the plug to seal on, and back to a standard plug.

grease and a shop vac work well to keep shavings out of the cyl, shop vac, I have adapted via duct tape a small hose to get down close to where the shavings are and you can run it down inside the cyl to make sure everything is out

Both K&D Tools and Heli-Coil make solid inserts and the self drilling tap to cut the threads, I put 2 in my KZ1000.
I have a K&D set from the 70's well used and always does a great job.

find a NAPA store or some GOOD parts house, the nimrods at autozone and the likes have no clue, the good places with people who know parts will be able to order it for you
