The crank was an ebay buy; so I don't doubt it was broken when I bought it...I mean ebay is the worlds leading market place for busted junk!

Jay is sending me emails, and keeping me in touch. My experience with APE so far is not perfect; but far from a horror story...

No reason for the pitchforks and torches yet

This type of edm does not have to be submergedthis is definatly the type you would want to go with. I believe it just has a coolant running onto the misshap area. I would definatly try a carbide first . You can even buy a carbide burr from harbor freight and use it in your hand drill.otakar wrote:

Find a shop that has a hole popper. We used one in the shop if we broke a tap in a hole. It is nothing more than an EDM that is designed to punch nothing but holes. My guess is that it would cost you about $40 to burn out.

This is a roll pin and not a dowel pin right? If its a dowel pin then you'll prob. need to find an EDM to burn it out. Those suckers are hard. If its a roll pin and you gave it to me, I'd cut it out with a carbide endmill. Just like getting out a busted tap. A drill might try to walk out of the side with the slot. EDM shops around here get top dollar for anything. It's probabaly 1/2hr of work for a guy with a Bridgeport so I'd guess that a regular machine shop will charge you $30 to $50.

Yes it is just a roll pin. I don't see how a drill would wander it is a hollow pin; the center of the pin should act like a pilot hole. Hell even if a drill bit was snapped off inside trying to remove it, how much worse off am I? I mean it would still need to be EDM-ed right?

I would imagine APE has a mill and the tooling needed to do it that way if they thought it was possiable; but I am being told it needs to be EDM'ed. With all the money I have tied up in it already what can I do but listen to the experts?

Anyway they seem to have found my crank (originally I was told it was headed back to me already, broken pin and all). However; it turns out the crank has not left their shop yet and they are looking for someone to remove the pin. I ordered a new pin from Z1 today and will get that sent to APE....

I am sure the cost is gonna make my eyes spin, but what can I do?

In an unrelated topic but no less tragic to my debt to income ratio; Carrillo hit me with happy news today. The rods I sent in need to be re-bushed at $75.00 a piece; that and my woman's student loans are all jacked up so she can't pitch in for rent till September.

At this rate my build will be done by next winter :( :(

Im not sure if I should laugh or cry!

This one looks like a solid pin, not a roll pin. it is sheared off clean. We do not have another 750 crank with a good pin in it to see if it is solid or a roll pin.

Many of the roll pins in Kawasaki cranks that come in are bent, smashed, etc. We have roll pins and just remove the bent ones and replace them before shipping the crank back.

The Kawasaki shop said the pin is available separtely, so we will see what it is when it shows up.

Kawasaki has the came part number listed for these bikes; so I would guess this is the same pin you have replaced on many of the Kawasaki cranks that come in.

If the one in that crank is solid, maybe the previous owner attempted some kind of repair... Thanks for staying on top of this Jay!

EDM is great but not cheap. Broke the advance bolt in the crank, flush of course. Had to remove the engine and take it to the machine shop - non submersion style EDM $ 225.

Got my crank back from APE today. It looks awesome. I will strip down a stock 650 crank and weigh them both tonight to see how much weight was cut and get some pictures up.

APE only charged me $40 to mill out the old pin and install a new one that z1 sent them for me. It took alot longer than I expected, but in the end I am happy. I did ask 3 times that the journal measurements be taken and sent with the crank; that did not happen so I will have to buy a micrometer... but no biggie there.

Sorry about the measurements. Our guys didn't write it on the work order.

Glad we were able to get the pin out, and didn't have to send it out. I was worried about some EDM shop damaging a journal.

Jay, I am very pleased with the final product... and I am sure that the bumps in the road were not the APE norm. I thank you guys for dealing with an often il-tempered customer in a wonderful way.

The stock crank weighed in at 21.4 lbs
The Ape crank weighed in at 17.6 lbs
That is almost 4 lbs lighter or 18% lighter (check my math!)

now for they cycle-porn....
