Ape called me about a month ago, asking me about a shop that did my EDM work here in Southern california. Said they had a customer that might need EDM work. I'm wondering if they called me because of your crank

BTW, EDM removal of my 2 sheared off crank bolts was $20 each hole ;)

So what all did you have them do? Lightening (obviously), Nitride(?), Polishing(?), etc?

Lighten, polish and nitride

they include magnaflux in the nitride process so I know this crank is solid and ready to go!

Very nice! Are you planning on doing anything with the rods? Shot Peen? Upgraded bolts (Kz650 has a two piece rod, right?)?

the rods are carrillo, I nabbed them on ebay from a 1980's racer who used them in his gpz750 for a season. Carrillo re-bushed them and re-shot peened them. Pic's of those to follow when they arrive back.

Grand total on the crank: $620
buy on ebay $30
shipping $60 round trip
APE lighten/balance $225
APE nitride,strighten, polish $265
APE repair timing pin $40

Grand total on Rods: $640
BIN from ebay $300
shipping round trip $40
Carrillo re-bush and shot peen $300

Bullet proof bottom end: Priceless   :) :cheer:

Are the Carillo rods the same two piece design as the stock rods? What about hardware for the rods - new stock bolts?

The rods come with 12pt bolts. I don't know what they are exactly but that have a solid no-BS feel to them... you know how some fasteners just feel cheap? these don't. They checked the stretch on those bolts when they spec'ed the rods (they spec their products, even 20 year old ones for free) the bolts were well within spec and fine to re-use.

Yes they are two piece.

K-man; all I care about is bulletproof up to 14,000 Rpm; over that and the limiter will kick in :)

Carrillo rods come with a Multiphase rod bolt that is MANY times stronger than a stock bolt.

You will never break one in a KZ. We use them in busas making 600+ HP.
