So, I'm looking at a broken sprocket shaft as the result of an over-enthusiastic chain tightening.
What's a good book to guide me through the process of replacing the gear set?

Much easier is to replace the motor, or even just the bottom end.

To replace the trans output shaft you will need to split the cases; it is alot of work; but not to hard if you have the proper tools and a decent work area.

If you are intrested I have a 750 bottom end that seems solid (I bought the engine for the head and cyliners). You could have it if you want it. I live in Maine but could meet you anywhere between Halifax Nova Scotia and Rochester NY.

::Edit:: just say your location in your profile, I don't think we will be able to link up

If you are going to repair your motor you will really need a FSM (factory service manuel)

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.
