I chemically clean all pistons. I never use an abrasive. With the exception of the crown if I ceramic coat it, for adhesion. And than I also chemically etch the aluminum with a Sulphate barrier on the crown and skirt.

If the piston is round i would use it. I use 220 sandpaper to remove any aluminum and then sand crossways for some oil retention, steel whool will final polish and remove any remaining aluminum deposits. I've never had a problem with this and you have good bores, which is the key to a tight bore when it's re-installed. That engine isn't going to know any difference.

You don't really want to use round pistons. When they become round and/or straight. it is time for the scrap bin.

This is my auction, those pistons are in great shape. I also have the cylinder sleeves they were used in (however the sleeves have been removed from the block).

I would be saving these pistons for spares if I did not need the space.

The only problem is that yours are for a 650 and his are a 750. :P

Wow, how did I miss that. :( Fail on my part!

Interesting. What's the story behind these guys? Modified aftermarket or custom made? What does the coating on the top of the piston do? What are you building? Other related info? Thanks

This is what they are in. It is a scratch built GPz1150R built on a 1981 KZ1000 CSR frame. It uses a 1984 GPz1100 head that has been highly ported. This picture was taken when it was still only a 1000

This is the combustion chamber and is the reason for the unusual crown shape.

Because I'm unemployed and broke, and trying to do this with almost no money, I'm going to try nads.com's idea of cleaning the piston up and reusing it. But that brings up another cheapie question. The manual says that if the rings measure out correctly, and don't look worn from oval, they can be reused as well. Has anyone reused used rings? I'd hone the bores a little just to get some tooth back. Responses?

Oh yea, otakar, what do you chemically clean them with?
Thanks!

U can crosshatch the cylinder with 220 paper wrapped around your hand. Just move it in and out of the bore while twisting back and forth. Do one end then flip the cylinder over and the paper and do the other end. Works great and will seal no problem. I've done it several times on my 1015cc and other motors. Always worked. Check the valves that they are all sealed. Use water in the chamber and air through the port if they leak take them out and look for pits, if none, lap them some and they should seal. Look at each seat closely for nicks or pits, if they have them those ones need to be cut. If they do tell the machinist very lightly touch them up so it doesnt take away all the valve clearance. You don't want to put it together with a leaking valve or two, it just isn't worth it. Besides people will say NADS! It's his fault! If you end up having a seat or two cut the shim wont fit anymore. Bolt the cams in and leave the valve spring out, slide the valve in and if there is no clearance grind the stem and recheck. Do a little at a time until you get your .005 or whatever u want to use. Good time to peek at the valve seal too, if they are shot it will burn a little oil.
