yep, just has bigger sprockets because of bigger center crank pin has 16 teeth instead of 15 like small crank.

The Story:

It's the summer of 1987, I'm 18 and have my first good money job. My big brother and his friends are all into hotrod japanese fours. I take my paycheck and dad's truck to Alberta Cycle in Edmonton and find a clean Z-1R with some street stroker shocks and a nice looking Wolf 4 into1 header for $1500. Have a blast riding all summer...

About October, I'm thinking I need MORE POWER for the next spring so I can be cool like big bro and his cronies. I check out RK Racing, a Kaw-based speed shop in Edmonton, to talk about bigbore, cams, etc. Randy, the owner, points out an ad with a Russ Collins turbo kit a local guy has for sale. I think I paid $700...

That winter, I split the cases, get the crank welded, get a valve job and better springs installed, and re-assemble. The bike runs well enough to do some serious burnouts in my dad's garage, and I can't wait to road-test it in the spring.

Spring comes, the bike makes killer power until the gravity-fed float bowl drains, then falls flat. Work gets crazy busy, I end up working a couple of months of 12 hour shifts, so no time to work on the bike. About this time, my childhood pal Mel is getting the Z-1 bug too. He wants to borrow my bike to go to a rally down south. Like a big dummy, I tell him that if he installs a fuel pump and regulator, then he can borrow the bike, cause i'm working all the time anyway. He installs the parts, and tries it out in my dad's gravel driveway. The rear tire digs a trench the length of the driveway and about 4" deep, filling the garage with gravel. Mel thinks this is fantastic, and wonders how it will work on the pavement... He takes the bike on the street in front of dad's house, wicks it WFO and dumps the clutch. After spinning the tire for about 30', it hooks up and does a violent wheelie, smashing the windshield against Mel's chest and crashing onto the neighbor's lawn. Broken fairing, windshield, seat cover torn, bars bent, front brake lever perch busted, turn signals busted. Mel has a new respect for boost, but no money... He repairs the broken fairing and paints it, and the bike is parked...

November 2009 or so, I'm surfing the net, and come across KZRider forums. I find out that all of the Z1R parts that I need are much easier to find than they were 20+ years ago. So the rebuild begins...
