"what advice do you all have for a beginner...any books, videos....just learn by doing"...

As already mentioned.. #1 is FACTORY SERVICE Manual is a must... Study it as preparing for a university final exam... ;)

As for the clutch adjustment... Something I learned off Plummen worked well on my 900.... Keep in mind I installed new friction & steel plates and clutch springs due to components being out of spec or warped.

Unknown what conditions your clutch components are in....

At first, in following the manual, I found it where wouldn't engage until the clutch lever was 3/4 out leaving no adjustment play at the clutch lever cable adjuster... That seemed a little weak for my taste...

Follow the manual instructions up to the point of screwing in until hard...

Here's the change, screw in until you just barely feel it contact the clutch push rod. Then back her out a tad (1/8-1/4 turn) then lock her down & adjust your mid cable adjusters then the clutch lever adjustments.

Now my engagement it in the middle of the clutch lever release where I like it...

Give it a try, may work better for you as well....

then somebody is pulling your chain the brake master is for brakes on the front only. it has nothing to do with your clutch linkage get a hold of a manuel and go into themaintence section and do the clutch adjustment completly step by step.

I think you would benefit greatly by buying a genuine Kawasaki factory service manual. They are nearly always available on eBay. Be sure to get one for your exact year/model. In addition to showing how to maintain and repair every system on your bike, they also describe each system and how they work. Mine has saved me tons of $$ and headaches. I promise you that you won't regret buying one. Ed

first things first how much free play do you have at the lever. it should have at least an 1/8"

everything seems to be like it says in the book...but still not working properly. Could it be that the pushrod is stuck or worn...????

Remove the sprocket cover and inspect the clutch rod for signs of wear or bending. While the cover is off, look at the mechanism that moves the push rod for the clutch, it should move when the clutch lever is squeezed.I believe Z1 enterprises sells replacement clutch rods.

It might need cleaning and re-lubrication, the mechanism will need adjustment after re-assembly after reinstalling it on the engine case.
