First Bike- Gas Dripping 84' engine 750 was created by robert1083
Hello. I just purchased a 1983 kz750 ltd, that actually has an engine from a 1984. It has 16k miles. The seller said that the carbs had just been tuned and cleaned. Everything seemed good for the first week or so. I took it around the neighborhood a few times before putting it away for the winter. I haven't winterized it yet (will soon as I live in Illinois), but I noticed that the bike had started to leak gasoline. It appears it may be coming from the the first carb on the left side. What could be causing this if the carbs indeed were just tuned and cleaned? I only have a side stand, could that affect it? I'm looking into purchasing a center stand, and I was going to get some Sea Foam for the tank. I appreciate any input. Thank you

Check to see that it's not coming from your fuel petcock, I am thinking that it sits under the tank somewhere above the #1 carb and may be dripping onto the carb.

If it is coming from there, what would I have to do?

If the carbs are leaking gas, then the float valve seats were not properly cleaned, and gas is flowing past them, overflowing the bowl.

You are turning your fuel petcock off right... ;)

A center stand won't make a difference, so its not necessary unless you really need it.

you can remove the tank from the bike, and drain the carbs to ensure that fuel doesnt get into the engine.

Then fill the tank, and add some stabil, and store it away for next season.

May as well take the carbs off the bike then, and clean them yourself. It very easy, and they shouldnt be horrible if you've been riding the bike ok.

Lots of carb cleaning and float valve polishing instructions can be found with the search function here.

Cheers, good luck.

Hello, Robert, and WELCOME to KZR! :)
We're glad you're here! :cheer:

If there's no aftermarket in-line fuel filter, it's likely that the float needle/seat interface has become dirty enough to prevent full closure, regardless of how clean the carbs were beforehand.

Should be an in-line filter on each fuel line between petcock and carbs. Some carbs use a single fuel line, while others use dual fuel lines.

Would consider removing and flushing out the fuel tank.
And also removing, disassembling, and cleaning the petcock, including the internals, and fuel pick-up screens that normally protrude up inside the tank.

Good Luck! :)

If needed, may click these links to see a couple of the in-line fuel filters available from Z1 Enterprises.

It does have one of those in-line fuel filters.

 Question -- do these carbs have overflow drain tubes attached to undersides of floatbowls and routed to exit underneath the bike?

If so, the leakage might be due to a dirty float valve, which might possibly be flushed clean by removing the floatbowl drain screw and allowing some fuel to flow through the carb.

This is a quick and easy first effort, which doesn't entail removing the carbs from the engine.

Would use a shop rag to catch the fuel as it escapes from the drain hole.

Good Luck! :)

on a 20 year old plus machine things wear out it sounds to me like a petcock problem or worn needles and seats or a spring in a needles has weakend the problem your having won't have anything to do with getting the carbs clean unless they change the float settings which if set to high could cause a problem is thleak happening out of the vent line or from the carb bowl gasket surface.

I had the same problem with my bike and it turned out to be the pingle petcock that was on the bike when I bought it. Once I replaced it I havent had any more problems.

It might also be a small crack in the overflow tubes. That was the problem with my float bowl leak.
