What's this oil leak? was created by polkat
Just in front of, and slightly under the stator cover on my 750-4 is a small, round cover of some kind (or maybe it's just a round marking on the case). The cover bolt here is actually a Phillips head screw, rather then a true bolt head. Once in a while I can see a small flow of oil coming out from there (or somewhere near there). Is this a common leak area, and is there a fix without splitting the engine case? Thanks!

Only thing I can think of is the oil gallery which also has another plugged hole on the other side, under the pickup coil cover. In my bike, a Zephyr, the plugs are hex. They should not leak, and don't think is common. If so, the plug should be resealed. If comming from the covers, then would probably be oil seals, as under the covers should be dry.

In front of & slightly under the stator cover?
Do you mean the starter cover? The only thing I saw in the diagrams is the secondary shaft plug that's behind the left side sprocket/engine cover.

Sorry for this lousy pic. The arrow points to an area under the stator protrusion where there is a Phillips head screw (bolt) apparently holding that area of the engine side cover on (sorry, I'm still new to this engine). The oil is seeping down from somewhere just above that screw/area. I'm not talking about the stator cover screw, but rather down under the stator housing near where the crankshaft end would be.

I have found oil showing there before. I traced it back to a bad Cam chain tensioner gasket. Rather than tear the tensioner off this summer I just threw some silicone around the perimeter f the gasket and the oil stopped showing up. I would inspect the base gasket and the cam chain gasket to see if they need to be replaced.

Good luck.

You said 750-4, I thought it was a 4-cyl, and the picture looks like a 750 twin. The arrow seems to aim at the starting clutch chain cover. I think is a chain.

You are right. Mine is a 4 and the pic is a twin. I just had that pic on my computer so I used it to point to the general area.

The cam chain adjuster area is dry...no oil, so it's not coming from there. The leak is not major, but it works it's way down and drops onto the exhaust crossover, resulting in a slightly smokey, smelly bike, especially at lights and stop signs. So I'm sure you can understand why I want to find it. I'll try to get a real pic of it tonight.

I have a manual. Went to kawasaki.com but didn't see what you are talking about. Must be somewhere on the home page that I'm not seeing.

Thisw had me puzzled as I have a 750/4 and never noticed a small cover in th earea indicated............so I took my camera and went out and took some pics.

The stator cover is held on with 4 bolts ( I have 3 allen and one phillips). In the pic below there's a bolt at 7 o clock and there's a bigger plug at 6 o clock.

Not the bolt/screw holding on the cover you say.

So lying on my back and looking up I took the photo below whic shows the 7 oclock bolt and the 6 oclock hex plug and midway between the two and maybe 2 inches inboard - almost where the engine case guards are connected to the fram is a bolt... maybe a 10mm bolt. Difinitely not a phillips screw.

Is that the one ? I have no idea what it is for.

I cant see anything else in there which looks like a small cover.
