HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION was created by MBFMGP
HI ALL,

ITS BEEN SOMETIME SINCE I WROTE ANYTHING BUT I NEED TO NOW.

I'VE GOT A 82 KZ1100D SPECTRE WITH 30000 MILES ON IT.

IT RUNS AND RIDES LIKE A DREAM BUT HAS ONE BIG PROBLEM.

IT BURNS A QUART OF OIL EVERY 200 MILES.

NOT A LOT OF SMOKE AND OK PERFORMANCE.

MY QUESTION; COULD THIS BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN BAD RINGS VALVES OR SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES A SERIOUS TEARDOWN???

THNAKS

FRED

Valve seals.. I doubt if it burning a quart every 200 miles..No leaks? A compression check would be in order..

Thats a LOT of oil to be burning, yes on a compression check, also make sure the vent is not plugged up it could be causing high back pressure and causing oil use

Are you sure your losing that much oil?

You should check the oil the next day, after its all run back down into the pan and returned to the same temperature.

Some guys can be overfilling, checking the oil hot and seeing it low in the window. Well thats because its all still up in the head and all over.

Goodluck.

pull your airfilter out of the airbox to see if its soaked with oil,if crankcase vent was plugged up it would definately be trying to push gaskets out to vent itself.id say scrub the motor down really good at the carwash and start looking for leaks, looks to me like theres a lot of oil around head gasket and basegasket area from your picture B)

HONESTLY, I'M POSITIVE IT USES THAT MUCH .... ALWAYS CHECK COLD BEFORE I USE IT.

WISH I WAS WRONG BUT IT USES THAT MUCH.

No way valve guides can leak that much. I would think if your rings were that bad, you should make blue smoke like a cropduster when you open the throttle to accelerate. Somebody behind you should be able to see your vapor trail. I'm not laughing, I had a 1970 plymouth that burned a quart every 300 miles. It's possible.

I had a bike that the floats were to high letting gas into my cly passing the rings thining my oil thus it was useing about the same has yours.I set the float level and changed the oil and the problem was solved. I don't think thats your problem but something to consider. My bike hardley smoked too.

On a motor that holds what ~ 4 quarts of oil, that's a huge amount of oil in 200 miles...

As mentioned, compression test, leak down test, oil pressure measurement etc....

I'm with the others, if it isn't smoking like a banshee, it isn't draining into the air filter enclosure/tube clear, no cylinder/head oil gasket leakage, plugs not fouled/saturated in oil, no oil at the end of the exhaust etc... then it has to be dripping out somewhere below unnoticed...... such as crack in the oil pan or lower engine case, oil filter gasket leaking etc...

Wash her clean, insure oil at proper level, jack the rear up on the center stand, cooling fan aimed on the motor, start her up and find the leak...

There's no way you can possibly be burning that much oil with no exhaust smoke or other mentioned variables in 200 miles... maybe we're all wrong but at least extremely unlikely to be burning that much.
