Larry, would the GPz11OO cams still be civilized enough to take my woman out a couple times a week, or would I be burning the clutch at every intersection? That's kind of the thing I am worried about since I am now used to the freight train coming on @ 3000 rpm. Secondly, would these GPz's be a drop in deal like I have been hopeing? Or will putting them in be a big ordeal? Thirdly, are the Spectre cams same as the J cams, or are they castration city like my LTD cams...?

As I recall, CSR, LTD & probably Spectre...all the cruisers had the lesser duration cams. Nobody ever came in with a Spectre and said "Hey...make this thing run" so I can't speak of that model from experience in building it.

The GPz cam is not a big cam by any means. If offered by an aftermarket company it would be considered an entry level cam. It's comparable to an Andrews 2X [the latter model 2x]

Way back, the 2x was a .340" lift cam. Later on they called that a 1x and ground a new cam with .360" lift...called it 2x.

Any cam you have in your hand to install...you ALWAYS measure it up to see how much lift it really has and you ALWAYS spin the motor over by hand while you watch the lobes for tappet bore clearance issues.

GPz11 "should" drop right into a J head and could be run with stock sprockets from the motor they're going into.

Still...you ALWAYS check things as you're fitting them. People might sell you cams saying / thinking they are for a particular motor and be mistaken...

I had brand new drop in cams that would not drop into a motor....Ask OMR about that...

Larry

Thanks, and makes sense about the Spectre. I will keep my eyes open for the GPz cams on eBay, I figure if I can find some for 75$ all in I will get em. My budget for the winter is about 3-400$, and my maintenance/getting the bike up to snuff will cost about 2-300$, so if I find cams then so be it, if not then I will get a jet kit and some pods...

OMR, I read most of your cam degreeing article and I am learning so much, I love it! thanks! Secondly, I have a set of 1981 or 1982 GPz1100 cams waiting for me if I want to get them...these would be basically just standard "J" cams right? I am waiting for the price..I won't need to pay shipping, so if they are 50$ CAD then they are going in this winter, if not I will hold out for the hotter 83-84 cams.

Thanks for all of your help, I know all I do is ask questions but believe me your answers are helping a lot. Soon enough I will not need to ask so much!

I have to ship a J motor back to BC Canada. It got some good cams while it was here. I'll ask the guy if he wants the stock cams back. If he doesn't, you can have them for the cost to ship. I'll let you know tomorrow.

I bought a set of 82 GPz1100 cams and they measure out at .345 lift. My '82 LTD camshaft is .315 or so.

Here is the thread where I was discussing this:

It is the '83-84 GPz 1100 cams that are .375 lift. I haven't measured them myself (I don't have a set), but that seems to be the consensus.
