I have a 1980 z650. The engine sounds great and goes great up to 7000 revs in 5th gear, but thats it. I only get 150kmph out of it. I have the timing spot on, I have also changed my petcock and main jets to 105s but nothing makes any difference. What else should I check? cheers in advance!

Checked the compression? Adjusted/checked the valve clearances? Running correct sparkplug gap and heat range? Replaced sparkplug high tension leads and sparkplug caps?

Adjusted cam chain tension? If not electronic ignition, replaced the points and condensers?

Checked primary(small wires)side of the ignition coils for battery voltage? If down around 8-10 volts your bike is suffering from low spark energy.

About 93 mph. (120 mph, give or take is feasible for these bikes)

Ed, do you max out at 7000rpm in the first 4 gears also?

Cam chain is good! have not checked volts at coils, will do. dinna electronic ignition fitted, so no points. BP7es plugs, valve clearance good. I have pods and 4 into 1 pipes, just fitted. Could the pods be the problem do you think? plugs tanned brown, so mix looks good.

 When the throttle grip is being held wide open, are all the carb throttle slides going into their highest position?

Good Luck! :)

I can chime in here. My bike, KZ650B, was topping out at 160kmph and it would stop gaining any more speed.

It had the airbox, points, stock gearing, basically a stock bike aside from a K&N filter.

After checking the plugs (B7ES) noticed they were fouled and black, I had the points adjusted and cleaned, the timing adjusted, adjusted the pilot screws, had the carbs synced, and completed the WG coil mod.

Now my bike can pull well past 160kmph. I have yet to find the the new top speed on my newly tuned machine.

The most noticable difference came from the power mod and timing adjustment.

If you already have 12 v at the coils then the power mod will not help.

Make a check list and go through the necessary steps and your bike will definately acquire a new top speed.
