Hopefully we're talking about the same thing. I'm referring to the housings or "baskets" that contain the clutch plates.
On my '81 KZ 750 LTD 4 cyl, you drain the oil, remove the right footpeg, take of the clutch cover (10 Phillips screws),take out the 5 pressure plate bolts (in a crisscross pattern, as there are springs exerting pressure behind them
Then, take out the springs, pressure plate, (also the steel ball and pressure plate pushrod behind it, although these stayed inside the sleeve that contains them so I just stuck a piece of tape over the end so they don't fall out when I move the bike)
Now, the clutch plates pull right out.

Then you take off the clutch hubnut (do yourself a favor and buy, borrow or steal an impact wrench - I tried to do this with a breaker bar and got nowhere)
You'll also need a "clutch holding tool" (I got a "Tusk" model on e-bay for $13.00)to keep the basket from rotating as you turn the nut
When you spin off the nut, the basket slides right off
If I can be of more help, let me know
Dave
