sleeve size question kz900 was created by Headly
Gday guys, decided to pull my motor down and put heavy duty crank, barrell and head studs in,o ring barrells and get a copper head gasket.I will get the crank done while its out(got some spare cash so thought nows the chance to do it right the first time).
Question is i have a set of 900 barrells that have been bored to 72mm and they have heaps of meat left in them so im guessing theyve been sleeved as my 1045 kit in my other barrells made the cylinders pretty thin.
1-What size can you bore 1000 barrells to?I thought 1197 was the limit.
2-Do you need to mill the upper case with a bore that size or will they fit?
Thinking of using my 1045 barrells in my chopper and buying some 8.5:1 pistons for my turbo bike,i just dont know what size i want to go,have heard that the 1200 kits make them run pretty hot for a street bike, maybe the 1100 kit would be better, what you recon?
Thanks for your opinions in advance.:)

1105 is about the limit with 1000 barrels i have a 900 block that has been with the bigger sleeves that is an 1197 there is a lot of meat removed that's for sure i use it drag racing i dont think i'd use it on the street. for street use i don't think i'd go bigger than 1075 the sleeves for the 1105 are getting a bit thin and i have heard from some people if they get to hot will go out of round.

with the turbo pistons its basically an 8:1 motor as long as youre not laying into it ,go with a good 1015-1075 turbo for a reliable daily rider.then when youre feeling spunky crank up the boost to 6-7 pounds and prepare to hang on tight!

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Thanks guys,i recon upon hearing that i might use my 1045 pistons and run an 0.080" base plate to take comp back to 8.5:1 as theyve only done a few hundred miles(save some cash for more bottom end work, everything is so expensive in Australia as we have limited suppliers and machine shops around and those that are basically know they can charge coz where else you gonna go!:( ).I emailed schnitz racing and APE last night and both will send to Aust even with the exchange rate and freight its still better price than here!
Used kz parts over here are worth a small fortune(depending on the part obviously)evilbay USA is like a smorgas board compared to here....

headly,
you are now part of a very strong kz community.:)
you now have access to lots of help and knowledge,i know that freight isn't cheap.sometimes in comparison to getting your "throat cut" locally frieght may be cheaper than you think.so don't hesitate to ask for help on this board,i have helped and been helped on this board and i as many other members on this board are here to help.
i know of several times i have seen parts go from member to member for the cost of freight,(in exchange for some pics of it in it's intended application:laugh:).we have very good suppliers who are dedicated to keeping these muscle bikes alive in ape and z1enterprises and some others that are known to members.
so best of luck with the projects and holler if we can help.

Thanks mate, yeah its been great to have feedback and advice on ideas etc, always good to have others who have 'been there' give advice before you make a possibly costly mistake!
Waiting on a reply from APE in regards to payment options via online so as soon as i hear back with what they've got to say i will order all my parts and get the ball rolling. Pulled my head off last night, everything looks sweet still, pistons & rings as new, still have hone marks in the bores, valves all good so its time to split the bottom end and see what lies in there.
