Rookie questions about my Kz900 was created by aforsythe
Hi, i'm new to the forum and recently bought a 76 KZ900 about 2 months ago and was wondering a few things about my bike;
about how often do the plugs need be changed? miles? inspect every oil change?
How tall is your 5th gear? Riding to work today i noticed 60mph = 4rpm, 70mph = 5rpm, 80 about 5.5ish.

Welcome, Great looking bike. Gearing seems stock. I change my oil when it gets dirty no matter the mileage. It is also a good idea to change it before you store it. The plugs will just go and go. Check the gap every once in a while. Roy

Very nice bike! Welcome to the forum. Your numbers seem to be correct. I change my oil at about 1800 miles and the filter every other oil change. I look at the plugs everytime I change the oil. Plugs will tell you when they need changing. Anytime the idle speed changes it is usually a plug issue. Got any more pictures?...Russ

Adam,
I have bad news for you. The museum called and wants their KZ900 back! That bike is beautiful!! A work of advice, if you don't already have one, buy a Kawasaki factory shop manual. Be sure to get one for your specific model/year; they're available on eBay. I can promise that you will not regret buying one! If the current plugs look a little tired I would change them now and check them every few thousand miles. Use a torque wrench when tightening, you don't want to damage that engine. Ed

Beautiful, clean 900. You don't see many like that any more.
I change my oil every 2500km (1550 miles). Hey, it's cheap insurance to keep the old girl happy. Plugs once a season, but you can go YEARS on the same plugs.

Thanks! it's an awesome bike and i lucked out. Far as i know; the story goes that it only had 2 owners, sat in a basement for years and the guy i bought it from restored it fully - he put the vance & hines on it, picture doesn't show but it actually has crome valve covers, dyna ignition, and the handle bars are more like drag bikes - has 18000 miles. unreal.
I appreciate the feedback as i'm learning as i go with it.
