ape covers was created by wagonmaster69
I put a set of APE covers to eliminate the smog ports on my 82 KZ1100.
what I need to know is when I took off the old cam covers they had some sort of diaphragm in it.
Do I leave them in or do I take them out?

what plummen said.after you remove the ports(the stock covers) there is no way for them to work.

They have to be left in or the new covers won't seal. There are no gaskets, just the rubber seal built into the smog valves. I guess you could make your own gaskets but the valves don't hurt anything - leave them in!

That's the way it is on the 79 and 80 engines anyway. I thought about removing my check valves when I got the APE covers, but I just didn't like the metal on metal. Maybe the newer ones have gaskets??

Well, it looks like the newer models DO have gaskets! As long as your gaskets are in good shape you can remove the reed valves. I only left mine in because they don't seal otherwise.

I always wondered why APE lists those as fitting '81 and up only - I think we know why now. They are the same physical size as the '79 and '80 covers but there is no way to seal them if you remove the reed valve. Now I'm wondering if the gaskets from the later models would work on my MKII? It would save a tiny bit of weight anyway. I might do that the next time my valve cover comes off...

That is what I was wandering. As when I took off the covers I saw no gaskets except for the reed valves.
So I guest I silicons..
