Need a part, HELP!!! Oil Pan Plug for 650... was created by Tyler
I just got the rebuilt engine back in my 1980 KZ 650 and I have a probelm. Originaly the previous owner had an oil cooler on this motor and I am not running one. I need the M17 x 1.25 allen head set screw that plugs the rear of the oil pan. Any of you with an oil cooler know what I am talking about. This is an impossible part to buy as nothing I have found suggests that M17 by 1.25 is even made for anything and my lathe can't cut metric threads. If anyone has this plug or even a whole oil pan with one let me know. My other option is to swap oil pans with and older engine but I don't want to go through that if I can avoid it. Prior to 1980 kawasaki used a M18 hex head plug, after that is was changed to a M17 plug.

I'm not sure what M17 X 1.25 is. I would probably just drill the hole out and tap it to the next size up that I had and then put a bolt in it with red loctite and it will be plugged forever.

I looked at the Kawasaki.com parts diagrams for the 1980 KZ650-F1 and E1, but I didn't see a plug at the rear of the pan. I do see one on the 1979 KZ650C3 and earlier KZ650 oil pans. Are you sure this hole wasn't drilled by the previous owner? If not, do you have a part number or diagram that shows the plug? Ed

Nope its the factory plug that is removed from the rear of the pan when adding an oil cooler. It is not available from Kawasaki. I doubt anyone would "make" that thread as a 1.25 pitch 17mm metric tap is VERY uncommon.
What I can do is cut the barb off of the Lockheart fitting and drill and tap it for a pipe plug. That way I don't have to pull the pan down again.
Just confounds me that Kaw would use such an odd ball thread and diameter, all previous models used a 18mm fine thread bolt, why they changed is beyond me...
