Hello
My kz550 ltd really needs a valve adjustment badly, provided that i have all the needed tools ( feeler gauges, shim tool, etc) is this something that I could do myself?
Im moderately mechanically inclined and have space to do all of this, I just dont want to get in too far over my head.

You should be able to do this. You will need a manual if you don't already have one, Preferably a Kawasaki factory manual. Make sure your local dealer has the shims in stock or that they can get them for you. Other than that it just a matter of taking your time, counting teeth and double checking your work!

A KZ550 needs the camshafts removed to replace valve shims. It's not hard to do, but you must do it correctly or damage will result.

Have you already measured the valve clearances?

Make sure you have a low range torque wrench for the cam cap bolts. They strip easily, you only want to put about 80 - 90 inch-pounds on them. You can get a decent 200 I-P wrench at Harbor Freight.
factory service manual is an absolute must. Use Clymers to sop up spilled oil, you need a real manual.
