you end up using all kinds of carbide cutters and lots of different sized stons flapper wheels cartridge rolls i use air die grinders i have 4 that are rigged up with different tools so i just grab the next one i need with out having to change bits i have a foredom cable drive set up with two power heads and lots of dremel stuff it is a substatial lay out of cash just to get set up i buy boxes of cartridge rolls by the hundred ,rolls and rolls of different grades of emory cloth, i buy cutters from snap-on i have 6 diferent 6 inch long carbides from them they are about a hundred a piece up here you have to get special alumunium cutters i have probably 3 to 4000 inveseted in seat cutters alone maybe more all together i have never put an actual dollar figure on it but i'm probably up around 10-12000 in total for every thing and i still don't have my own flow bench yet so i'll have to save up for that yet to and one also i have a special oven for doing guide replacements and a bunch of guide drivers and reamers to do that messy job as well you have a tough tim,e porting anything radical with the guides still in. it take alot of practice and alot of time bent over a bench with the air screaming in your ears to get good. i am glad i can do it but it really is time consuming and hard on your ears and back.
Hey! Somebody take those grinding tools away from timebomb! No wonder he is grinding holes in stuff! He just wants to play with all those new tools........

here is a good starter kit
ccspecialtytool.com/pages/page08.html
having several hand pieces(die grinders)with tools already loaded is handy as timebomb suggested.
start on your worst head first.
at mondello's joe taught us with makita electric die grinders such as this
www.makita.com/en-us/Modules/Tools/ToolDetails.aspx?ID=420
they are cheaper to get started with and by using a lightswitch dimmer you can control the speed, then just find a local supplier to buy the bits from.snap-on or mac will be higher than buying them from a distributor.
i,like timebomb have several different grinders and gobs of different sized bits.you will find tho that you will do the majority of your work with just a few favorite shapes once you get comfortable with them.
you do not have to spend a million dollars to get started, although you will have spent way more than that once you are through, .hope this gave you enough to think about.if not pm me and i can lead you further astray :woohoo: .

I don't have a whole lot of experience porting heads but I'd really like to get into it. I have a few spare 650 heads I'd like to try some stuff out on. I've read alot about the theory and have a pretty good grasp on it. My question is what kind of stone or burr do you guys use for your porting?? Does APE make any shorty valve guides for 650 heads?? I'm starting to gather parts for an 810 motor and I'm wondering if GPz 750, KZ750, or KZ650 heads will make the best starting point?? Any answer would be awesome.
I'll take a shot at the head question. It all depends on what size carbs you plan to run. The 650 head can use 24mm,26mm,28mm,29mm,31mm and the GPZ head can use 34mm & up.
It's all what you think, will be your best all-around choice. Myself, I would not even think of the 34mm carbs, buts thats just me..........
