Doing the first oil change on my 550 which requires the removal of the exhaust. I'm baffled by the oil drain bolt. You can see it in the pic, it's a large circular washer with two metal washers under it. It has a 10mm hex inside of it. Its just in front of the oil filter bolt/cover. I dropped the exhaust but can't budge that drain bolt. If its not stock I suspect the p.o. welded it on. I was thinking of removing the oil sender unit to drain the oil !!
(sorry for the poor pic quality)

it doesnt look welded from pic.....you would know right away if it was welded as you would see a bead somewhere....you might need to drop exhaust and get an allen wrench socket set,a 1/2 drive ratchet
with a 3/8 adapter and a small pc o' pipe and cross your fingers....you might want to get bike semi warm before you wrench on it......good luck....keith.:)

gaillarry, Have we had dealings? i've a lovely set of loweres on my fz750. To the subject at hand. Just looked at my kz550 A1. it's drain bolt is 17mm at same location, I wonder if PO replaced w/ allen for clearance to pipe. regardless, if removal is sketchy, why not just remove oil filter bits? its going to be messy regardless and the difference in oil drain negligible. Gane: Have we had dealings? Not that I know of, I'm in Northern Ontario. I did have an FZ750 a few years back.

I suspect this bolt was in place to allow easy access with the exhuast in place. I did change the oil filter but not that much came out. The site glass is showing lots of oil in the engine. I'll try again tomorrow with a breaker bar.

G. do as you think best, I would however rec, bringing oil/to operating temp before attempting removal. heat helps, and tapping head of bolt before hand shouldn't hurt. luck g

Looks like a "low profile drain plug" the drag racers use when lowering a bike. Make sure you are using the right size allen wrench that is not rounded off. You might try removing it with the engine warm or using an impact driver on it. It has seized because of the different metals corroding when in contact with each other. If you reuse it, use some anti-seize on it. Good luck.

With cold engine, could try heating oil pan area around the plug with propane torch just before attempting to remove plug. Theory being heat will expand the aluminum to help release its grip on the plug.

As already suggested by others, use properly fitted hex tool with air operated impact driver.

Good Luck! :)
