kerker exhaust mounting 81 kz750 ltd
21 Mar 2009 22:07
I bought a Kerker 4:1 exhaust off ebay for an 81 kz750 LTD that I recently acquired. The exhaust came with the cast aluminum flanges just like the stock exhaust, but the stock exhaust has a section of pipe welded to the header end of the pipes so the split rings can push on them. The kerker system is flanged at the end and the split rings are not long enough to push the exhaust into the engine. What do I need to mount this and where can i find it. I've searched this forum, the internet, supertrapp/kerker's site and come up empty as far as mounting kits or instructions.

I'm not getting a clear picture from your description. I have looked at the parts diagram and it shows no extra 'pipe' welded to the end of the stock header. Kerker's were designed to work with the stock mounting gear w/the exception of the muffler hanger.

my stock exhaust has a section of tube about 1" long slipped over the end of each header connection and is welded/staked into place. this reduces the distance between the aluminum flange and the end of the pipe that the split rings need to press against. the split rings are about 3/4" high so the total distance between the flange and the exhaust outlet on the engine is about 1-3/4" deep. the kerker exhaust is flanged right at the end of the tube, so it seems that the split rings would need to be 1-3/4" high to fully seat the headers. am i just trying to install these wrong?

Gorack is correct you need the earlier keepers from a KZ650 the 1000 uses a bigger diameter pipe so they won't work. I'm not sure if you can still buy them from Kawasaki or not but I think they run about $3.00 each and you need 8 of them. Also once you get them it is much easier if you use some scotch tape to hold them together while you are mounting everything up. The heat will pretty much just burn the tape off once you run the bike.

bluemeanie, that's the parts i need. thanks for your help guys. I bought this bike for $100. It had been sitting in an airport hanger for the last 6 years and the guy was more than ready to get rid of it. I've been going through it for the last month getting it ready to ride. the weather is warming up and i'm getting that itch. now i just have to get a broken needle out of one carb and the bike is ready to be put back together.

I'll check at the local dealer for these parts as i would rather just buy them new if they're only about $3.00 a piece. are the aluminum clamps the same on all the bikes, or are the older ones thicker also?

See if Z1 enterprises can get the correct collars or keepers for you. Also on some of the bikes the exhaust studs were 6mm and the later bikes went to 8mm.

I'm pretty sure mine are 6mm, I have two sets of the aluminum flanges, so that's not really a problem but i'llcheck with the calipers when i get home.

Can I resurrect a thread this old?
Short of it, my pipes will not fit into the split collars, thus leaving a large gap.
I am having troubles fitting a kerker to an '82 Spectre. Trouble is, I've been riding it for a year now. Took the pipes off to re-paint, and when I went to put them back on I decided either A) I'm an idiot or B ) these were never fit properly.
Here's the parts diagram, which doesn't exactly match the Spectre:
My problem is the pipe (5) does not fit into the collars (2). My keeper (3) is a more oblong affair, and smoothed edges.
This thread recommends part no. 92027-264 which is a new split collar:
But I'm not sure how that will help. Do I need to get the keepers from a 650?
Pictures of my situation are attached, and thanks!
