Wirges.....now there's a name from the way back machine. I ran his pipes on Kaw tripples way back when. You have quite the archive for old magazines John.

I find these things on the net. The ex wife had a camp fire with all my old magazines. I remember the names of the companies and slowly track them down. Sure wish I could get some pages out of a Denco catalog.............

This is a great topic !

Just some stuff you all might want to know .

# 1 , I'm running a Bassani superbike pipe on my 74 Z1 .
It's an OK pipe BUT weighs a ton .

Building a pipe is not so hard ,,,,,,
Building a GOOD pipe is a little tougher ,,,,,,,

It takes knowing what you have in your engine and what you want out of it AND where .

Just a bunch of math .

You CAN buy most of the parts, ie collector from race car building supply places.

When you are putting one together the trick is VOLUME !!!
ALL the head pipes should be the same VOLUME .

The math is to figure out what the right volume is .

You can use water or "play sand" to that once you have a #.

The sand works out well when it's time to bend also .
Put it in the pipe , poor mans hydro forming.

Now if you can weld and have a friend with a muffler shop you are all set .

I've seen sand used but water? how is that used? Do u have any info on the math of pipe design?
The Bassani is an ok pipe?? compared to??
i have not run anything but a Kerker so i cant say 1's better than another. what i would like is to hear , is the dif between pipes, from guys that have run diff 1's.

I would think that the Bassani and Yosh ,having 3" collectors ,and shorter primaries, would turn on at a higher rpm. the others seem to have a 2.5" collectors and longerer primaries, that should come on lower in the rpms.
Do u have another pipe to compare the Bassani with? I'd love to hear a comparison?

Thats a good read. i've read the theory before but i dont understand his formula?
Intake tunning length is L=88,000 + N

N = intake valve diam. 36mm (stock KZ)
L= distnce from intake bell to valve stem.
(lets guess at 11" or 279mm)

So L = 88,000+36mm

So what is 88,000?:S

Bill Wirges also made a left exit pipe very similar to the one shown ,except it had a straight megaphone with no upsweep. Had one a on a 1132cc.big motor street bike back around 1980 or so... No baffle, sounded like a big block.

Mark,
The Bassani that I have was sold as a race pipe only.
It is kind of loud , like a kerker with a comp baffle in it, but a little deeper sound I think. Maybe because it's VERY thick walled steel.
Don't let the big collector on the Bassani fool you , it has some sonic tricks inside the collector.
I'll try to get some pics when I have time .
The MOST HP on the dyno that I remember was from a Kerker with a med. baffle.
And "back in the day" I have tried them all .
PS , The Bassani is VERY high maintenance ,you have to strip the pipe down and antiseize all the parts like twice a month during riding season or it will cook itself into one solid unit .
