I have had them out on a 650 engine when I rebuilt it - did put them back in when I assembled it again though.
If you're asking how to do it I can post some pics when I get home from work.
I am talking about leaving them out, All together. If you could help with that it would be great.

Once the mainshaft is out you remove the outer bearing race and the circlip at the end of the shaft, then pull off the needle roller bearing, two spacers and the first gear.
To remove the fourth gear (which is sitting right behind the first gear) you hold the mainshaft vertical by the ball bearing at the opposite end with the fourth gear pointing up - spin the shaft so the neutral finder balls are slung out of the recesses in the shaft and lift the fourth gear off.
Reassemble the main shaft, just leave the balls out, that's it.
Below is a pic of the mainshaft, fourth gear and balls removed. Let me know if you want more info/pics, I have a spare transmission in a box.

why would u want to leave them out? that would cause it to be harder to find neutral. when u stop and bring the shifter up from 1st it could easily slip into 3rd.
what is the benifit u are looking for?:silly:
