How/When to Fix 750 Twin Starter Clutch? was created by bountyhunter
There is a lot of talk about how the 750 twin starter clutches go bad. Mine has always worked fine and shows no symptoms.

How do you know if it needs to be fixed?

The other problem: if they are bad, how do you fix them? I assume a used one would be no better than mine.

Is it the roller pins that wear out or the clutch itself?

thanks

I think the main issue is that when the rollers wear that the electric start will not work well. The dangerous issue is the bolts that hold it to the atator will break or loosen up and lock the motor up suddenly. best to check it as soon as you can.

Do it right or don't bother doing it at all.

Some of the non permant Loctite #242(Blue) will work well, just don't use the #222(Red)as it need about 400 F to loosen up. The 242 can be broken loose with hand tools but resists vibration well.

So the only real hazard is if the bolts that hold it to the stator loosen up?

Is that a common problem? My FSM says that they are normally assembled with a non permanent locking agent.
