In researching this very same issue in my project, pretty much everyone (known engine builders) I spoke to replied the same... 1045 in a 1000cc cylinder, bore & hone only...
In a 903cc cylinder, sleeves required but you will be on the thin side... In Arizona summer heat, thin not a good option...
Here's another thing to think about as in my case, I had broken cylinder fins so instead of paying over priced fin repairs, obtain one of the over stocked parts galore kit (cylinder, Wiseco pistons, rings, pins, clips included)... 1015, 1045, 1075...
Now this was an interesting option.... 1045, hmmm.... Here's the thing though, I would need to enlarge my top lower case cover for the bottom of the cylinder sleeves
to fit into, just like I would need to do with the 1075 cylinder...
At which point I figured, what was it worth to me like 1015cc with my CAM & carb selections wasn't enough.... Naw, didn't want to go there, especially after what I went through with MRE who does the machining for overstock... No thanks, 1015cc was more than enough power....
Just my 2 cents worth....

there's plenty of hard running small motors out there,it comes down to whether or not you know how to put it to the ground.
Quote from Larry C when doing my research into what performance I was looking for.... I guy in his area had a 1045cc motor, forget which cam & carb setup but said the guy was untouchable for many seasons...
Basically was kickin the crap out of everyone with that little motor setup... Big 1075's & huge CAM/carb guys just couldn't figure it out on how this little motor was cleaning their clocks....
Outside of our wives/GF's, bigger is not always better!
